Sheboygan Loved Livesey

This is a repost from the Summer of 2010

I was just looking for the time of the Finance Committee meeting yesterday and my buddy Google starts telling me about some deal Governor Doyle is taking credit for that involves Livesey and Sheboygan. I poked on those big blue letters of his and Google has Verona Press editor Jim Ferolie tell me more:

“Gov. Jim Doyle made his first official visit to Verona in two years last week to attend the company’s groundbreaking, telling the roughly 70 people in attendance that he sees its decision to build a $30 million plant and bring 45 new jobs here as a good sign for the state of Wisconsin’s economy and a continuation of the state’s “leadership” in the biotechnology industry.”

Good for Verona, but what does this have to do with Sheboygan? Jim starts telling stories about SAFC Pharma, Governor Doyle, SAFC-Pharma, land owned by Livesey, and Tif districts. Great story Jim but, Sheboygan, I need to know about Sheboygan Jim.

Jim tells me about some mouthpiece named Tony Hozeny, and Tony Hozeny says: “Enterprise Development Zones are defined as “distressed” areas with such problems as high unemployment, low incomes, layoffs, populations declines, etc. While Verona matches none of those descriptions, it is within “an 11-county region.”

Wow Jim, you are packing in the information today, but I need to know about Sheboygan. I hear about $60,000 a year science jobs, curing cancer and eliminating heart disease, but nothing important until Jim drops the bomb: “SAFC reportedly had considered some foreign locations but hoped to build near its Madison facility. Still, Verona’s most serious competition wasn’t with Middleton, Madison or Fitchburg but with land SAFC already owns in Sheboygan, and that provided the impetus for TIF assistance, to “level the playing field,” as Murphy put it.”

After this I didn’t care about the man that almost domed Sheboygan, time for the meeting.

Read and I mean read Jim Ferolie’s articles at the Verona Press, interesting stuff, like the rest of this story, Tif Districts and our old buddy Livesey.

Alderman Jim Gischia was kind enough to add the following:

Mike,
I checked. The issue regarding Doyle and the potential expansion in “Sheboygan” was actually “Sheboygan Falls” and the Aldrich Chemical plant just south of town.
Sheboygan is sometimes used as a generic term by “Madison types” do don’t venture any further than the beltway.

FYI – Jim

Thanks Jim, I love it when people correct misleading information, I do the best I can, and need help just as we all do.

I was wondering where this could have been, and erred in not pinning down the location. Would still like the plant in our area, and you might agree (Jim agrees).

Rick Santorum Shoots Turkey in Sheboygan

I now have pix of a Republican Presidential Candidate rolling a Turkey in Sheboygan, WI., and a Democratic Presidential Candidate shooting Pheasants in Iowa.

Rick Santorum proved to the Sheboygan masses that he is indeed one of us.

Math says it doesn’t matter, Mitt Romney 568, Rick Santorum 273, first to 1144 wins, with 1258 delegates up for grabs. Santorum is more of a Dennis Kucinich than a Hillary Clinton in this horse race. He’s simply running to get his name out and improve his ranking in the party, this primary is over unless Romney has an inter-species three-way.

Citizen Bob – 53081 TVA Departing for

The Ryan family will continue to enjoy Sheboygan, that’s what they do. TVA will be joining us this season as the new Captain of the Love boat, rebuild – restore – renew.

The Quarry exists, it can be opened with a free willie approach, cut the fences, open the area to full use. Like our rivers, or the big lake, let it be.

Winding down in a cartoon town has it’s advantages, enter normal guy Terry, Mayor of Schnoidtown.

get involved, get Sheboygan.

Patrick Drinan Pats Self on Back- Sheboygan Groans

The following is a monthly business column for The Sheboygan Press by Patrick Drinan, executive director of the Sheboygan County Economic Development Corporation, I’m not sure if he’s double dipping or if this is a press release from the taxpayer funded corporation, either way, i’ll reprint it here for purposes of education.

In August 2009, the Sheboygan Development Corporation amended its articles of incorporation, and the Sheboygan County Economic Development Corporation emerged as a new private/public nonprofit organization with a countywide focus and representation.

In 2010, the SCEDC established an aggressive five-year strategic plan. Our strategic goals are to support creation and retention of 3,500 jobs and to assist businesses in activities that will bring $100 million in new capital investments to Sheboygan County by 2014. Continue reading

Weird Local Blogger Takes Pictures – Gets Chided

Here’s my, hey, maybe I should read what I write before posting it comment on my local newspaper of records story on Asher and Bob’s time on big Chicago radio.

Yes, it is true that unlike many of The Press staff, I live in Sheboygan, not the greater Milwaukee area. Yet, I’m not a photographer. I’m a photojournalist, and the difference is dramatic enough that an entire profession of highly skilled visual journalists work under the banner.

Tonight: Joran van der Sloot in his own words & can city recall mayor because of alcoholism?

Dr. Drew is live tonight! He and his guests will examine admitted murderer Joran van der Sloot’s handwriting samples in which the killer reveals his thoughts about Natalee Holloway, gambling, and former girlfriends.

And citizens of a town in Wisconsin are trying to recall the mayor who has alcoholism. Mayor Bob Ryan and his wife Mary join Dr. Drew to discuss his public behavior and if it’s grounds for losing his job. Dr. Drew  will define what “problem drinking” is and how you can help those who suffer from it.

Daniel Baldwin vs Jeff Conaway – Celebrity Rehab – “unbeknownst”

Watch Dr. Drew tonight and every weeknight at 9 on HLN.

This would be like Richard Nixon appearing with Charles Manson to discuss Watergate on the David Frost show. Great warmup for my trip toWGN studios in Chicago to watch Asher Heimermann discuss the Sheboygan Mayoral recall with Jonathon Brandmeier. You can listen to the show live here. He will be featured between 8 and 9. I’m there as a journalist:)

I listened to this dude from the 70′s  in Wisconsin to the 80′s while I was the king of all media in Freeport, Illinois. Should be fun, I think Rod Blagojevich and Danny Bonaduce will be joining us*
